פרופ' משה גיטרמן - מעברי פאזה 86-829

א. מטרות הקורס:

The theory of phase transitions and critical phenomena is the most important chapter of modern many-body physics.  Such vastly different phenomena as the melting of ice, magnetisation of ferromagnets and superconductivity are united in a universal theory sensitive only to the symmetry of the problem and its spatial dimensionality.

ב. תוכן הקורס:

After a general statistical mechanics introduction, the course begins from the five pillars of the modern theory (the Ising model, mean field theory, scaling, renormalization group and universality)  Afterwords, a more extensive analysis will be performed of those problems  which are of major interest in modern physics, such as Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity of alkali atoms, vortices in perconductors and high - temperature superconductivity. Finally, more recent applications of phase transition theory (spin glasses, small-world phenomena, self-organized criticality ) and current trends will be discussed.

ג. חובות הקורס:

Each student has to give a lecture, which will be the basis of the final mark.
