Solid state physics is the basic course giving to the undergraduate students knowledge in crystal symmetry, band structure and kinetic properties of metals, semiconductors and dielectrics.

 

ב. תוכן הקורס:

 

I. Introduction

Length, time, energy scales in solids. Atomic shells. Metals, insulators, semiconductors, magnets, superconductors, liquid crystals, quasi-crystals, glasses. Long and short range order. Periodicity. Thermodynamics of quantum gas. Microscopic equations and Broken Symmetry. Electron and ionic subsystems. Born theorem.

 

II.                Interatomic Forces.

Electrons configurations in atoms. Chemical elements. Hund's Rules. Spectroscopic indexes. Covalent, ionic and Van der Waals interactions in solids.

 

III.             Crystal Structures

Crystal Lattice in Solids. Structural Factor, Bravais Lattices. Reciprocal Lattices. Brillouin Zones. Index system for crystal planes.

 

IV.             Electronic Properties.

Bloch theorem. Band Structure. Dispersion Law and Fermi Surface in tight binding and nearly free electrons approximations. Density of States for arbitrary dispersion law. Effective mass. Anderson localization.  Metals in magnetic field. De-Gaas-van-Alphen effect. Ferro-para and dia magnetism. Magnons.

 

 

V.        Semiconductors

Chemical potential in semiconductors. Electrons and holes. Donors and acceptors. P-n junction. Semiconducting devices. Optical properties.

 

VI. Phonons.

Phonons in one dimensional lattice. Dynamical Matrix and Secondary Quantization. Dispersion Law and Density of States. Phonons in 3D lattice. Thermodynamics of phonons. Optical phonons.

           

VII. Transport in Solids

Drude Conductivity. Boltzmann equation. Conductivity tensor. Electric and Heat Transport. Electrons in magnetic field. Magneto-resistance and Hall Effect.

 

VI        Superconductivity

Screening in Metals. Thomas-Fermi and Friedel theory. Landau criterion for superfluidity. Ideal conductor and superconductor. "Jelly" Model of Metals. Electron-phonon interaction. Cooper Pairs. BCS-theory. Quasiparicles. Superconducting gap. Zero resistance and Meissner effect. London equations. Vortices.
