Soft condensed matter
- Prof. Eli Sloutskin
In Prof. Eli Slutzkin’s lab, two research projects are available for Master's and PhD students:
First project: Some liquid droplets defy intuition: they remain liquid inside yet, under temperature control, spontaneously reshape into polyhedra, cylinders, or spirals. We will study how these droplets interact with liquid crystals-materials that flow like a liquid but retain molecular order like a crystal, and are widely used in displays and sensors. The project combines experiments and theoretical modeling to reveal new physics of interfaces and open pathways to reconfigurable soft materials and adaptive optical devices.
Second project: Exciting experimental-theoretical project, The student will investigate structural defects in two-dimensional crystals formed on the surface of oil droplets. The interplay between different types of defects, and between the defects and the crystal curvature, allows control over the droplet behavior and enables the simulation of biological processes within a simple physical system.
Type of work: Experimental
