Abstract

Natural populations are spread over space, with individuals interacting only locally. Almost all of our evolutionary theory neglects this spatial structure, but simple models show that realistic levels of spatial structure can dramatically reshape evolution, particularly adaptation. I will discuss how space interacts with adaptive evolution, and prospects for using genetic data to infer how individuals move through space, and particularly detecting long-tailed, non-diffusive dispersal.
